Spatial Partisans – Central and Eastern European practices claiming the right to the city

The workshop aims to gather together individuals and collectives from Serbia and East/Central Europe which are taking active part in shaping their cities and ‘fighting’ for city spaces. The workshop is conceptualized not as question-answering but as a question-asking process.  In our interactive workshop, first in the introduction, we want to present the need for discussing East and Central European participatory planning and design practices in practical and scientific realm, which are context specific, have their distinguishing characteristic and set of motivational factors, usually different then the ones developed in Western Europe. Secondly, through a collaborative mapping and joint drawing exercise, we want to venture with practitioners from invited collectives and workshop participants to collaboratively discover and map participatory design concepts, tools, methods, approaches, practices, and values transmitted through practitioners` ventures into claiming the ‘right to the city’. The workshop invites spatial partisans – ‘change makers’ and ‘rule breakers’ from a broad variety of disciplines – architecture, urbanism, spatial planning, geography, sociology, psychology and beyond, experts and students alike, to bring their cases and projects, questions and topics of interest to collectively and critically build assortment of empirical evidence and conceptual insights around the current bottom-up practices of tailoring the city with and for citizens in this part of East and Central Europe. The workshop will result in identifying overlooked practices, their quality and potential, as well as in charting new research agendas to be transformed into future research project of the facilitators, carried out through a collaboration of Union University Nikola Tesla and TU Berlin. The workshop is intended as a starting point of a longer endeavor to make these practices visible, connect their struggles and transform the way we plan and make our cities, towns, and villages in Central and Eastern Europe. The workshop is conceptualized as a collaborative learning process where participant will get an opportunity to explore practically collaborative mapping as a tool for identifying emergent participatory planning and design issues in a local context, and acquire deeper insight into tools, methods, and approaches of important protagonists from Serbian context who created and are creating city spaces with and for people, thus claiming their right to the city.
