New Urban Living Rooms.

A creative workshop for students was organized as part of the On Architecture Philosophy of Architecture. The concept and moderation of the workshop New Urban Living Rooms. was developed by architect Manuel Collado Arpia. Final works from the workshop were presented at the International Exhibition On Architecture 2022 in December 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia.

ABOUT

After almost two years in pandemic confinement, experiencing our domestic spaces intensely, we have discovered new spatial categories and places to relate to each other. For example, during the liberation parentheses, wherein many cities we were allowed to meet with few people and only in open spaces, our living rooms have gone out the streets. This way businesses such as cafes or bars have taken their tables to the outside massively, to allow that extension of our houses and their lounges in public spaces. But there has been no thought concerning the design of these new meeting spaces and thus several questions are raised:

What are their new needs?

How can they offer us welcoming and healthy environments at the same time?

How do we understand the new communication technologies applied to these spaces?

How are these new living rooms integrated into the urban space?

How do they incorporate nature?

What type of gathering rituals can be triggered?

The goal of this workshop will be to rethink and design this new type of urban lounge that has emerged after the pandemic, going beyond a place for consumption or commercial exploitation such as cafes with tables and chairs. The design will surely have to consider a type of furniture but now it becomes a new design opportunity that generates an urban totem or attractor defining or symbolizing this hybrid space between the living room and the street.

AGENDA

The Workshop begins with two online sessions starting 2 weeks prior to face-to-face sessions to be held in Belgrade, Serbia.

The online sessions provide guidance about the topic and opportunity to start the work through research on similar spaces, their new needs, and urban conditions for these “new urban living rooms”.

The face-to-face Sessions will be focused on design process and creating drawings and first collages and finishing with simulation/performance of the design proposals in class using recycled domestic objects.

In between Morning and Afternoon face-to-face Session an informal open-air holistic exercise will be organized for interested participants as a way of promotion of new urban rituals.
Production work will be divided in teams 2-3 people.
Prior to the start of the Program the teams will be formed, and sites chosen.

Workshop outputs will include:
– 1 DIN A1 poster (presentation with graphic info about the designs and images/collages)
– short 2-minute video (simulation of the interactions in each team proposal for the new urban living rooms, using recycled and adapted common domestic objects).

ABOUT

As part of the OA2017 an intermediate Grasshopper workshop was be held by architect and computational designerAndrea Graziano, Co-de-iT member & Co-founder.

“the Basis of the Universe Isn’t Matter or Energy … It’s Data”  – James Gleick – WIRED

The space in which we live can be monitored in many aspects and it appears as a flux, a gradient of data in continuous evolution and change. Our understanding of surrounding environment is improving every day due to our ability to scan and sample the environment around us at increasing resolution using better technologies and sensors. Hence the space is revealed as a ever changing data field and our cap-ability to act and design the space itself can be enhanced by the use of tools able to inform better the design processes with more accurate, specific and variable, in space and time, data streams ad patterns.

inFORMation is an intermediate Grasshopper workshop about data embodiment strategies and advanced mesh modeling techniques.

Grasshopper is actually a powerful information processor that provides the basis to develop possible strategies to inFORM digital matter morphologies by specific set of data conditions. The workshop focuses on integrating information processing into digital systems to enable the formation of structures, from the very simple up to more complex ones. The aim is to give an understanding of information and data articulation as a spatial and architectural operations.

We will explore the use of Grasshopper to define algorithmical procedures aimed to express highly complex structures informed by different conditions at different scales and levels of details. We will learn by play that information is matter substance.

AGENDA

Day 1
Mesh components proliferation, data tree, mesh & subdivision tools, mesh tessellation, attractors logics, mesh displacement

Day 2
Data tree – advanced methods, non-standard tessellation, vector fields logic, bundling technique, kangaroo & mesh, mesh relaxation, mesh differential relaxation, marching cubes technique

Day 3
Design tutored work (project development)

Software & Skills requirements
3D modeling skills in Rhino3D and basic Grasshopper are required.
Participants should bring their own laptop running Windows with pre-installed Rhino3D software and latest Grasshopper plugin version.

ABOUT

As part of the Conference Going Digital a basic Grasshopper workshop was be held by architect and computational designer Andrea Graziano, Co-de-iT member & Co-founder.

The workshop will explore the use of Grasshopper, plug-in for Rhinoceros, to provide participants the fundamentals of parametric design to support their design explorations. Parametric Design with Grasshopper is a basic Grasshopper workshop that will focus on how its nature as an information processor and how it can be used in order to manipulate data and to inform geometry from the very simple up to more complex ones. The modeling of parametric surfaces and geometries (Nurbs or Mesh) requires an understanding and manipulation of information and data structures in order to define the entire design process from design to production. The aim is to give an understanding of information and data articulation as already a spatial and architectural operation. Participants will learn to define algorithmic procedures to develop parametric data structures to inform their own ‘data-driven’ geometries and how to prepare the models for 3D printing process.
