8TH KILOMETER
By Iva Bekić, Petar Cigić, Dalia Dukanac, Stefan Đorđević, Irena Gajić, Mirjana Ješić, Hristina Stojanović, Snežana Zlatković (Serbia)

The 8TH KILOMETER project represents in-depth, intriguing and valuable research addressing future environmental and social challenges. The jury rated the project as an outstanding contribution to urban design, based on a careful analysis of urban development across different time and scale zones.
The installation at the Venice biennale shows a beautiful representation of the highly challenging situation in the mining city of Bor. The seductive and alluring installation design cleverly juxtaposes sensitive, material qualities – using copper sheets from Bor – with illustrations of a convincing proposal to solve the city’s pressing environmental and atmospheric problems. The proposal to extend the city with an 8th kilometer presents a brilliant and evocative example of future urban design strategies.

JUSTINIANA PRIMA: Archaeology. Myth. Open Air Theatre
By Vladimir Milenković, Nataša Ćuković Ignjatović, Milica Milojević, Mila Mojsilović, Jelena Mitrovic, Duška Prodanović, Filip Prica (Serbia)

JUSTINIANA PRIMA as a visually expressive narrative of architectural history is a testimony of magnificent architectural achievements, placed within the context of theater architecture. Mightily imagining idea, image presentation suggestiveness results both in exceptional appearance of architectural space and art of it`s structural elements.
More deeply, scenic exploration of open air theater emphasized through saturation of color display, creates impressive landscapes images of architecture seen as archeological fragments. Highly aesthetic presentation of pure imaginary experience versus objective reality, stimulates optimistic visions of boundary expansion which dramatizes beauty of its new visual language.
Even more, this work presentation authenticity aspects architectural landscape as a new vision which is of special sensibility and artistic expression.

POST-PALIMPSEST
By Anastasios Tellios, Despoina Zavraka, with Panagiota Koulali, Eftichis Efthimiou, Kalliopi Valsamidou, Georgios Grigoriadis (Greece)

Post-Palimpsest is a valuable design experimentation, worth mentioning, because it speculates on the interpretation of space, architecture, urban design and public space, while showcasing evidence of the multiple and constant layering of Thessaloniki’s urban tissue. It is a spatial tool for witnessing the past, which simultaneously offers a ‘library’ of existing urban typologies and future spatial investigations, by using cutting-edge technologies supported by virtual reality (VR) applications. The jury is curious how this project could be further developed.

THE MACHINE IN THE MOUNTAIN
By Elena Longhin (Italy)

The jury finds this example to be excellent research regarding the exploration of the territorial conditions of a region and the thorough analysis of the hydro-electric project which has altered its overall landscape. It aims to understand the social, institutional and ecological dynamics of ‘the machine’ -especially in a period where the climatic aspect becomes even more urgent than ever- offering an in-depth investigation on the techno-natural legacy of the wider region. It seems to be encouraging further research and development. Taken these aspects in consideration the jury decided to honor this project with a recognition.

ENGINEERING WATER- AND LAND-SCAPES: Swimming Pools Design Guidelines and Methodologies Between the Freeform Leisure and Professional Water Sports Standards
By Dragana Ćirić (Serbia)

This project shows us how aesthetics, design, public programme and land formation can blend together beautifully into one architectural gesture. It suggests an innovative take on architecture of a larger scale and urban design that is worthy of a recognition.
It proposes a unified complex consisting of different water environments and spaces, which integrate smoothly with their surroundings, the waterfront and the river basin, as if they were always there in the first place. With this project, architecture and landscape are brought closer to the community in order to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants and offer a variety of water sports and activities in a well-articulated mechanism.

MEET ME HALFWAY
Exploring Architecture Across Realities
By Anna Pompermaier (Austria)

The MEET ME HALFWAY installation is a wonderful example of a hybrid, phygital (physical + digital) experience. It is a multi-user, extended reality installation exploring the potential and implications of architecture across realities. The strength of this project is the unique relationship between virtual augmentation, natural landscape and physical objects as connecting, tactile communication elements.
The jury sees the project as a valuable contribution to ongoing and necessary research into our future, which will continue to blend virtual and actual materiality. As such, it illustrates the impact immersive technologies can have on contemporary architectural thinking as well as design.

SOFT ROBOTICS IN ARCHITECTURE
By Vera Parlac (USA)

This project deals with the relevant topic of adapting architecture to the changing needs and conditions of users and / or environments. In the context of “kinetic architecture”, the project presents a responsive system that includes the physical movement of building elements.
In the past, “kinetic architecture” was primarily characterized by the fact that it used rigid, mechanical systems. Recently, investigations in the field of kinetic architecture have concentrated on “soft robotics”, characterized by physically flexible (“soft”) bodies, such as pneumatic systems, e.g. Pneumatic Artificial Muscles (PAMs).
The “Soft Robotics in Architecture” project proposes a pneumatically operated modular system that impressed the jury with both its conceptual and aesthetic qualities. It makes a valuable contribution to the contemporary architectural discourse on responsive architecture. The jury is curious to see how the proposed system could be further developed and implemented in an architectural project.
